Being located so centrally between Edinburgh and Newcastle, things to see and do are at your very doorstep.
Take a trip to the internationally renowned wildlife sanctuary of the Farne Islands to discover magnificent seabird colonies and one of the largest breeding colonies of Grey Seals in the UK. Boat trips are available from the harbour of the nearby seaside town of Seahouses.
Sights such as the imposing Bamburgh Castle, the now world famous Alnwick Castle ( Seen in Harry Potter, Black Adder and more!) and the ruined cliff top castle at Dunstanburgh are not to be missed - their uniqueness owes much to Northumberland's own distinguished and turbulent past.
The World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall lies to the south of the region and can be reached in around an hours car journey. This marks the most northern boundary of the Roman Empire and spans the entire length of Britain - 73 miles from west coast to east. Built between AD 122-30 the wall was constructed to divide the "Sophisticated" Roman lands to the south from the "Savage" country of the north.
Not all sights in Northumberland reflect a violent history, and the Alnwick Garden is one of the best examples this. A £12 million project of Her Grace, the Duchess of Northumberland the garden is a spectacular 12 acre site complete with cascading water fountains, a Pavillion, it's own "Poison Garden" and of course Europe's largest treehouse the nestles in the boughs of some magnificent beech trees.
The sportsman and woman are well provided for in Northumberland. For the golfer, there are nearby courses at Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Belford, Seahouses, Wooler and Goswick.
Of course, if you fancy some city sightseeing we are centrally located between Edinburgh and Newcastle. Edinburgh is world famous for it's historical architecture, cosmopolitan vibe and of course it's impressive castle the overlooks the entire "old" city.
In Newcastle upon Tyne, some of the newly designed structure's are equally as impressive. Buildings like the Sage Centre for performing arts, the Baltic Art Gallery and the Blinking Eye Bridge are both daring in design while serving various functions.
If that fails to keep you occupied the National Trust have a big presence in the region through Cragside, Wallington and the Farne Islands. The borders also are'nt far with the grand houses of Mellerstain and Manderston along with attractions like the Smailholm tower making the journey north a worthwhile one!
With a massive diversity in terms of things to see, the North East is a region waiting to be explored.
